Job description


We are an analytical laboratory, testing water samples for chemical and Microbiological analysis.

LOCATION: Crayford

WORKING PATTERN: Mon- Fri 0800 – 16:00 ( 30 Min Lunch break)

Accountable for the successfully day to day operation of the chemistry, southern and northern microbiology laboratories to ensure all operational, quality, health and safety and financial metrics are achieved to meet customer requirements. To ensure standard operational procedures are followed and all staff adhere to these. To support the management team in continuous improvement, staff development and operational excellence.


• Overall management of the laboratory teams to ensure that all samples are processed and analysed to the required standard by appropriately trained staff within a time limit appropriate to the client expectations following SOP’s and associated quality standards

• Operate and maintain procedures to ensure that the laboratory environment is upheld in a suitable condition for the analysis performed, including appropriate housekeeping procedures and EHS standards

• Ensure all Quality Management protocols are adhered to and performed as per the appropriate schedules to protect and enhance the laboratories ISO 17025 accreditation and other ISO standards

• Manage individual and team contributions to ensure goals and performance targets are met.

• Management of laboratory managers, ensuring the laboratory is adequately skilled and resourced

• Ensure all team members are adequately trained and supported in the performance of their duties and responsibilities. Coaching team members to understand their own performance and how it relates to company performance and their own career development.

• Ensure that all staff work in accordance with Health & Safety policies and procedures in their day to day activities including the use of appropriate PPE equipment.

• Participate in client, accreditation and internal audits when required and working with the site quality team, ensure the execution of corrective actions and compliance with client, accreditations and procedural requirements

• Manage and monitor overall performance within the laboratory. Aim to improve efficiency and productivity in the laboratory where opportunities arise through the application of LEAN tools and practices.

• Generate and maintain good working relationships with managers across the wider Laboratory group to share best practice and utilise cross site expertise.

• Ensure budgets are adhered to and work with the senior management team to improve efficiencies

• To support laboratory managers and analysts in maintaining, fixing and managing laboratory instruments and equipment


• A Degree or equivalent in an appropriate scientific discipline ideally in applied chemistry or microbiology.


• Significant experience of supervising / managing teams.

• Experience within a laboratory environment would be beneficial or production environment.


• Proficient user of Microsoft Office programs

• Good organisational skills, ability to work on own initiative and priorities workload

• Ability to lead, motivate and develop a team

• A flexible approach and the desire to achieve continuous improvement

• Excellent attention to detail

• Analytical and problem-solving abilities

• Knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIMS) or application of relational databases

• Experience of Lean and 5S

• Good understanding of applicable regulations, standards and best practices,

• Good communication, interpersonal and influencing skills at senior level

• The ability to present complex information (both internally and externally) to diverse audiences and levels of understanding,

• Excellent problem-solving skills
